USABILITY / UX DESIGN

I have extensive experience as a Usability Engineer for Web-Based (B2B & NHS) and bespoke Software applications. I have conducted many usability assessments, created and implemented style guides, created user journeys and wire-frame prototype screen designs. I've involved end-users at all stages of development and created dynamic prototypes to give a feel for the proposed behaviour of the system under design. Some examples are shown below.

I have Degrees in Psychology and Masters Degrees in Ergonomics and Information Systems Management.

The Brief:

Case Study

Bank Touch Screen Study

A London Bank was considering the introduction of Touch Screens to Cashier Workstations and had already completed some initial assessments / feedback from users.

Requirement:

In depth Usability Evaluation of Touch Screen Implementation in the cashier bank setting.

Work Carried Out:

Literature Review of Touch screen best practice

-Design Considerations
-Target Size
-Pointing Strategy
-Software Keyboard Layout
-Viewing Angle and Operation Angle
-Scrolling Strategy
-Hand and Arm movement
-Obstruction and Screen Real Estate
-Tactile Feedback

Guidelines for implementation of Touch Screen

-When to use
-Data Entry caution
-Menus
-Structure
-Touch
-Accessibility

Pros and Cons for Touch Screen implementation

-Speed of Input
-Screen Sensitivity
-Screen Angle
-Clutter

- Seated / Standing Operation
- Lighting
- Body Movements
-     - Trunk
   - Arm / Hand
   - Hand / Eye
- Motor movements

Current Tasks

-Task 1 XXX & Steps
-Information Requirements for those tasks
-Work Schedules
-Communication / audio environment

Usability Test

Conditions Identified for Test

1. Touch Screen and Keyboard
2. Normal monitor and keyboard (and mouse)
3. Normal Monitor and keyboard (and mouse) and new look and feel application (Left Nav)

Test Procedure

-No of Participants
-Tasks to complete
-Length of Sessions
-Participant Experience Levels

Usability Test Execution

-Instructions printed & Process verbally explained (3 Run-throughs per condition).
-Condition Order Systematically altered to prevent 'learning effect'
-Informed Consent Forms
-Pre-Evaluation Questionnaire
-Post Evaluation Questionnaire
-Participant Profiles
-Detailed Task Instructions

Run Throughs

Run Through 1: Explaining the concept of use and led by the tester, hardware is demonstrated and initial reaction to screens noted – including screen clarity / organisation,  comprehension etc..
Run through 2: Trial run through for user where they are encouraged to ‘talk aloud’ their  goals and actions and verbalise any issues and positive feedback of the technology and screens.
Run through 3: Timed trial – user encouraged not to talk – just to perform the actions, and timed from start to finish. Comments may then be recorded at the end.

Metrics

- Computer Video Screen Capture & External camera
- Questionnaires
- Tester Notes
- Task completion times

Quantitative Results & Analysis

-Graphs & Statistics
