HUMAN FACTORS / ERGONOMICS

30+ Years in Human Factors in Civilian, Business and Military Domains dealing with installation operation and maintenance of equipment. I have experience in the planning and execution of Human Factors Integration activities mandated by Military standards.  Setting up and running working groups with end-users and customer representatives and stakeholders.  I have collected and maintained Human Factors Issues lists along with associated mitigation strategies. In addition, I've become an expert user of the JACK anthropometric human modelling CAD software and integrated its use with Unity and Virtual Reality in order to perform design assessments (paper presented at EAAW conference 2019). I've interviewed Operators of Naval systems in order to facilitate modelling their tasks (using IPME), and designed a 'Dynamic Visualiser' front end to facilitate analysis of model execution. I've also recently become involved in aspects of Human-Machine Teaming where the introduction of Artificial Intelligence created new challenges for the tasks of the future.

Most of the projects I worked on in the Military domain I can't show here due to classification issues. However here are a small sample of some HF areas I've worked on.

I have Degrees in Psychology and Masters Degrees in Ergonomics and Information Systems Management.

Human Factors: Text

Tank Exercise

Messing around on Salisbury Plain, purely in the name of getting the 'User's perspective!

Plan and Profile Displays

Developed demonstrator to show the usefulness of a 'Profile' (Side) display perspective in trying to determine whether sensor contacts are from one or two different real world airfraft

IPME Modelling Output - Visualiser

Developed demonstrator to take the output from IPME Human Performance Modelling tool and visualise who is performing what tasks at any given time, the Perceptual, Cognitive and Manual workloads as well as the multi-channel  Windex workload of the individual operators and the collective team effort.

Percentile Calculator - Anthropometry

If i discover I need a tool and it doesn't exist then I'll make it myself, as is the case with this Percentile Calculator which will work out the Percentile value of any new measurement you enter (if you have data on the mean & 95th %ile of that population).

Specifying Cognitive Requirements
- Technical Guide

I developed a 'Cognitive Framework' comprising Innate, Complex Assembled and Task Induced categories of Cognitive skills and a series of HCI guidance based on these. It is now a Technical Guide for the MOD.

JACK Anthropometric Modelling

I have extensive experience in the use of the industry-standard anthropometric modelling tool - JACK.
